In the year 1652 a terrible fire occurred in Glasgow, which ravaged the Town for 18 hours, during which the greatest part of Saltmarket, Trongate and High street were destoyed. One thousand families were burned out of house and home. For days and night the poor people were
compelled to encamp on open fields. The loss was estimated at ÂŁ100,000, a very large sum in those days.
Sunscriptions were raised through-out the entire Independent Kingdom on behalf of the sufferers.
Another great fire took place in 1677, by which 130 houses were consumed.
