So yesterday there was some Discourse on sergals. I’m not sure where it came from but that’s largely irrelevant. I chatted with a friend about it some and decided to put my thoughts down over a couple tweets.
A lot of people, as I understand it, feel that broadly speaking a sergal OC is a red flag.
And you know what? That reputation is entirely earned. They are not wrong to have that feeling.

I think that there has been real effort to change that perception, between canon reworkings and the Vilous team more generally, plus all the lovely wedges out there that I know.
But the fact is that early on, a real shitty contingent of people settled in like a tick.

I see absolute no value in protests of “we aren’t like that!”
Yes, I’m not. If you’re in my general circle of friends then I’m confident you’re not. That’s irrelevant.
Ultimately “we’re aren’t like that” is no different than an ultra-niche take on “not all men”.

The only things that are going to fix it are time and working to fix the problem.
That means being your best self, speaking out for others, and making the lives of shitty people in this fandom unbearable.
All this *and* understanding what people’s first impressions are.

You know what I don’t like doing? Vetting people. I don’t have a big following but now and then I go and check to see who’s following me, and I go and block the bots and shitlords.
It sucks, I have better things to do with my time.
People have to do that with every sergal.

An example: I like listening to a lot of extreme metal and industrial music. It’s awesome.
It also has a very active white supremacist movement within it.
I can either check out great new music and constantly worry about *who* I’m listening to, or I can just not listen.

So: I don’t hunt it out most of the time. I have options that are more vocal in rejecting white supremacy. I have “safe bet” musicians that I stick with.
I trust you all can see the parallel.

I suck at ending threads so let me summarize myself:
There are good reasons sergals have the rep they do (yes, I didn’t go into them. Don’t care), and complaining about the rep is pointless.
Be an actively, vocally decent person. And kick the shitty ones to the curb.
The end.
