So I see that many of you are dipping your pinky toes into food access, sovereignty, apartheid and cost today thanks to KeKe. It’s a long over due convo PERO... and walk with me here. It’s not all the fault of big business.
If you have beef with the lack of grocery stores in your neighborhood reach out to your LOCAL politicians (put pressure on them) specifically, City Council members, the Dept of City Planning/ Zoning, your elected representatives.
Work with food pantries and other community organizations to assist with food access. Just do your googles. Volunteer your time with smaller orgs as they need the most help. Don’t have time? Write some letters. And of course DONATE.
Volunteer with orgs that help foster relationships btwn the community and farmers, it makes a difference. Educate YOURSELF on the issues that are most important to you and share that info in a non condescending manner to those in your circle. Knowledge is power.
And I cannot stress this enough. See my second tweet. PUT PRESSURE ON YOUR CITY COUNCIL. THEY HAVE THE POWER TO DETERMINE WHAT TYPES OF BUSINESSES GO IN A NEIGHBORHOOD.
Be mindful that the changes aren’t going to happen over night. But if the number of people that I’ve seen talking about food policy since 9am today used this same energy in their local community you would be a force to be reckoned with.
