We have had a mask mandate for most of the state for the past month. We made it statewide to eliminate confusion, because of our rising cases and hospital utilization.

Q: Why did the state pick the interventions that were announced last night?
A: Dr. Dunn - if all Utahns adhere to the public health order (mask mandate and limited social gatherings), we can start to see an effect in two weeks.

A: We are trying to find the right balance.
The intent is to limit gatherings and contact to limit the spread of the virus.
Fans at the football playoffs will be limited and they have to be masked and distanced. Other sports are postponed.

Q: What is Utah doing to plan for vaccine distribution?
A: Our plan was submitted to CDC last month. It’s hard to plan for a vaccine when we don’t know how many doses we are getting. We are excited about the prospects for the Pfizer vaccine.

Q: Where are you getting more tests for the state?
A: CDC told us they would send us more tests to test more college students. That’s where we are starting, in addition to high school sports.

Q: Are we shutting down businesses, like dance studios or cheer? Or is this mostly just high school sports?
A: Private businesses should be able to continue if they ensure mask wearing and maintain physical distance. Most school sports are just paused for the next two weeks.

Q: Does increased testing just find us more cases?
A: When we identify more cases, those people can be told to isolate and thereby stop their ability to spread the virus. Eventually, increased testing will lead to lower percent positivity of tests.
