#OnThisDay, 1985, TheGabba, Aus vs NZ, 1st Test of the series
A true
& NZ hero, Richard Hadlee picks up 9 wkts in Aus' 1st inn. to help NZ win in Aus vs. Aus for the 1st time ever
But what happened to the 10th wicket in that inn.? Why couldn't Hadlee do all 10?

NZ were treated like lesser of the brothers in this Trans Tasman relationship with Aus
Didn't get to tour Aus for a long time
Aus themselves were in disarray because of the massive black clouds of Packer cricket and rebel cricket

NZ reached early for this tour, warmed up well incl. a tour match at The Gabba itself
Marty Crowe, Hadlee were two of their best while the rest of them made up for a well balanced side
Hadlee was 34, maybe cut down on runup & pace a bit, but still as wily and skilful as ever

On Day1, NZ skipper Coney won the toss and asked Aus to bat
Border, a seemingly reluctant captain at the time, would have loved to win it himself on a helpful Gabba pitch
Before bad light, rain stopped play on this day, Aus were 146/4

Only Kepler Wessels provided some meaningful resistance
All 4 wkts were picked up by Hadlee, of course
On Day2, Aus would have hoped for 250-300 runs total but Hadlee had other plans
Ran through the middle & lower order to end with figures of 23.4-4-52-9
Aus 179/10

NZ 1st innings was all about a sparkling
from Martin Crowe with 26x4s and a sedate
from John Reid
Hadlee was just in one of those phases of Midas touch, smacked 54 runs off 45 balls with 4x4s and 3x6s
NZ reached 553/7 at end of Day3 and declared
Such a huge lead!

Even in the worst of times, the Aussies never give up
A severely depleted team, staring at a huge deficit & a possible defeat at The Gabba in the 1st Test, all of this against lesser rivals, NZ ...
Anyone else would have let go
But not Allan Border, @GregMomatthews

Both of them scored fighting, combative 2nd innings
s in these trying circumstances to restore some semblance of pride in the Aussie ranks
Border remained not out on 152
Hadlee continued to be menacing in this innings too
6 more wkts for him to end with 15 in the match!

Hadlee had bowled like a dream and perhaps, the secret was how close he went to the umpire and the stumps in his run up
Made the batsmen play at almost everything and beat the edges so very often
He had given all of @BLACKCAPS a big reason to celebrate!

Oh, and that 10th wicket in Aus' 1st innings
An NZ off spinner who was debuting in that match, Vaughan Brown, picked up that one.
And you know who was the catcher? Richard Hadlee himself!
And it was the 9th wicket to fall and it was such a difficult catch too that he took

To take that catch when you have already taken the first 8 wkts was an extreme act of team spirit on Hadlee's part
John Wright perhaps tried to help Hadlee ;) when he dropped one a couple of overs earlier off Brown
Brown played just 1 more Test but didn't pick up more wkts.

Here's the brilliant @robelinda2 with a video of @RichardHadlee talking so eloquently about his 15fer in the match to the late great, Richie Benaud. :)
