Honestly, the sudden “don’t pave the trails enragé” amounts to nothing. Some people that seem to think they know what a city, that doesn’t know what it has planned, has planned, have strong opinions on those plans...
Without hearing those plans or hearing the arguments for those plans, they already have made up their minds. This is basically how all modern politics works, and it’s pretty much the death of informed (and respectful) policy making.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t be trying to persuade them, but I’m saying we need to spend more time thinking about why so many people think they already know all they need to know. And why they are so bloody angry when they know so little.
