I finally finished Pokemon SWSH
It's not very good
It has some highs but the lows are painfully low and the game feels rushed and half baked as a result
The absolute worst offender about this game is the region design.
Most of Galar is made up of routes and towns with very little breathing room between gyms (except the first gym) and the pacing in the 2nd half of the game is absolutely terrible
The region itself is also very uninteresting. We're on the Switch yet quite a number of town and cities don't feel bigger than a town or a city on the 3ds. Spikemuth is just a straight line and Ballonlea has nothing going for it other than some strong art direction.
Speaking of the game's graphics, they're alright. While there's definitely areas of this game that look quite bad, there's enough nice looking areas to compensate. Considering the game was developed in only 2 years, they did the best they could even if it looks a bit amateurish
STORY:
The story and characters of this game don't really go anywhere. No character leaves an impact and characters like Bede come of more annoying than genuine
I think Marnie is cool but she doesn't get much screentime and the other characters are uninteresting
The last thing that really bogged down the experience for me was the game being behind the times in terms of features.
Not being able to turn off EXP distribution for your Pokemon is ridiculous. You do have the box at all times now which is good but ~
me putting Pokemon in the box to stop EXP distribution creates this feeling of not being attached to your team as much. It sounds really nitpicky but it does kill that feeling for me
Other than that there's also no difficulty options or multiple save slots
So in terms of stuff that i LIKED:
I think the way leading up to the first 4 gyms of this game is pretty enjoyable. The first 4 gyms have really cool events that you need to participate in
Bea/Allister's gym has the coolest concept for a gym puzzle and it's excecuted really well
The gym battles also have a lot more weight to them. You're fighting in this huge stadium with the crowd cheering and it makes these battles kind of exciting. It also helps that the level curve for a good chunk of the game is really tightly designed actually
Dynamaxing has the potential to be a good mechanic. i'd love to see it being fleshed out. The problem currently is that it's very predictable when a gym leader is gonna dynamax their Pokemon. They also recycle a lot of moves for multiple slots so there's not much variety
I think i've pretty much said everything i wanted to say
I don't *hate* SWSH but it's so obvious these games were rushed and the end product is really mediocre. I really don't want the series to go in this direction of being behind the times in terms of graphics and features
Also Game Freak is not *untalented or lazy* It's annoying how people have spun this narrative because of shithead youtubers like DistantKingdom. These games didn't get the chance at all to have the same amount of development time as DQ11 or Persona 5
Blame TPC for all of this
