Twitter is so confusing. Are y’all rich or nah? 5 mins ago y’all was worried about Biden’s 400k tax raise & now you’re mad about EBT comments. What’s the truth?
IRL: Yes, we need more nuanced talk of food insecurity/ deserts. Step 1? Naming these are real widespread issues.

Yes it’s often true that people are being shady when they imply certain demographics don’t have nor eat healthy food. It’s also true those same communities lack grocery stores meeting the latter criteria.
Changing how “food” is counted federally for folks with EBT is crucial.

Why? Because there’d be less food desserts because capitalists respond to just that: how to make money.
There’s an entire look into how dollar stores have become the new one stop grocery in many food desserts. They’d add healthy food if it would make them money. But why do?

Why add food when the high fructose, early death or at least diabetes in a box or can, items are able to be purchased with EBT?
Y’all are discussing this as a theoretical concept without realizing it’s some of our loved experiences.
My old neighborhood became a food desert.

The grocery stores pulled out because they couldn’t make enough money. I was lucky. My family organized ride shares to real grocery stores and my mom had a particular knack for normalizing green food in my house.
That access we had? Privilege. It’s within group (poor) priv.

I was just picked on last year for craving kale— which used to be cheap before the hipsters got to it. We’ve been eating it out whole lives.
I almost never had a meal without something green/ healthy at home and my mom was annoying about whole grains versus white/ bleached.

I am keenly aware why I got fat in college— BC my parents were not there to watch me and despite my training I made poor choices. But what kid who grew up poor doesn’t want the fun greasy stuff daily on campus?
Anyway, my point is this- y’all can argue rhetoric or real issues.

We must see the forest from the trees. We can be mad celebs are worrying about what poor folk do, or we can organize them to help us demand change.
Lots of poor people have NO access to healthy food. Not saying it won’t change it. But the chastising is on grocers, not people.

An even better question: why isn’t healthy hot / prepared foods included on EBT?

So many of you hate poor and working class people that you’ll do anything to yell about what they don’t do. But you won’t advocate for what they can do.
A single mom working 5 jobs busy.

Who gonna cook when you can buy a microwaveable and put those kids to bed?
This is a multilayered complex issue and at the root is lack of access to health food that’s fast.
If the US govt actually cared, we’d have hot prepared family meals for EBT.

People always ask me why I won’t have kids and I usually make up some lie about wanting to be free. But that’s a lie.
I wouldn’t bring a child into this capitalistic world because I am too scared they could end up back where I came from. I’m a few paychecks away and I can’t.

I couldn’t forgive myself if I ever brought someone into the world to live how most of my family still does. That’s not a diss to them, ignorance is literally bliss.
But I’ve seen the other side. Watched the disparities w/ my own eyes. How the hell is “don’t say that” the story?

Surviving poverty is traumatic no matter how much these middle class rappers try to pretend otherwise.
The answer isn’t policing the conversation. The answer is forcing it from a place where we worry about what poor people do, until we worry about what’s done to them.

And no— many poor folks don’t eat healthy, Brad and Becky. But if your middle class lifestyle wasn’t subsidized by poor folks’ “low wage” labor and exploitation, you prob wouldn’t either.
Covid has brought to light so much, and here y’all go refusing the lessons— again.
