I wanna talk about this more.
HBCU’s are respectable negro factories, assimilation into the white power structure + capitalist culture is how you receive praise. https://twitter.com/clarissambrooks/status/1325649179218227200

Many black radical thought leaders attended + graduated from HBCU’s but were generally not supported by those institutions.
To leave an HBCU with an understanding of black power + black excellence not rooted in white supremacy and capitalism is a rarity.
This is why it’s so weird when people say HBCU’s don’t prepare folks to assimilate into the “real world”...
because baby, they absolutely do. way more than any PWI.
you are GROOMED to assimilate. to “change” the system from the inside.

Charles V. Hamilton defined a Black University as “an institution that pushes away from from white middle class standards, allows students to think critically to solve problems in poor Black communities & offers courses in Black studies.”
Kwame Ture (is formerly Stokely Charmichael) stood at Howard University and demanded just that.
He had to.
Because Howard, like other HBCU’s was not/is not an inherently radical space.
How could they be?
