I saw a few tweets today complaining about Miedema's efficiency or influence against the big teams (Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd this season) in the WSL compared to the "other teams". What do you say and we take a look?

So, as a ground rule, keep in mind that the "other teams" do have a big gap with the top 3, unlike the NWSL to give you an example. And it's absolutely possible that it also happens with other players.

I'm gonna take data from the 2018-2019 season onwards because otherwise there are gaps. 2 seasons and a half to check, only in the WSL. The win ratio for Arsenal is pretty low (doesn't count yesterday's game)

On those 9 games she scored 4 times with a fair number of shots (22 - 12 on target). However, she still outperform her xG of 3.2. She also registered 2 assists from a xA of 2.8, giving her a tally of 6 goals + assists from an expected 6.

To give just a little bit of weight on the goals, she scored the winning goal once (1-0 victory against Man City - 27/10/2019) and twice in a won match (5-0 against Chelsea, 14/10/2018)

As expected her xG performance sky rockets against "not the big teams", where she was expected to score 32 times and she registered 44 goals. Her shots on target % is slightly better (55% against 53%). And also outperforms her xA (17 from 9).

As the previous graphic shows, she also gets better positioning to shoot which would only bring a higher xG/ chances to score.

My conclusion? I think she does what she's asked for, and she has raised her own bar so high that even when she does what's expected for her, she's under the spot.

Her xG+xA against big teams is exactly matched and not many players in the world can say that. Vivianne Miedema is one of the most prolific strikers in recent history (and it's still pretty young).

Is she the "GOAT"? Not my call, but I think that performance wise she's at the level she aims and needs to be, and if any questions should be raised are to team tactics and plans.
