While it is true that McGurk is pro-SDF & had a very antagonistic/dysfunctional relationship with Turkey, he saw the partnership with the SDF as temporary & the ultimate solution was to use the SDF to fight ISIS & once they're done, help the SDF get a deal with Damascus.

McGurk imagines such a deal, mediated by Russia, would secure the rights of Kurds. SDF/SDC officials have stated in public & private that negotiations with the regime went & are going nowhere. The moment the regime believes the US will withdraw, it has no interest in granting the Kurds any rights. It'll just wait the US out & then reimpose control.

This regime's return to NE Syria will mean mass arrest & displacement of those wanted by the regime. After Trump announced withdrawal in 2019, thousands of them fled to the KRG & Turkish occupied areas, before Jeffrey & others convinced Trump to stay.

The Kurds have been repeatedly instrumentalized by outside powers to wage their wars. They were used to fight Saddam, Turkey, the Iranian regime, AQI, ISIS, only to be abandoned later. Hopefully that historical pattern will not repeat itself in NE Syria under the Biden admin.
