I don’t know if Pfizer’s preliminary claim of 90% efficacy is accurate, but I do know that:

1. they have every incentive to hype their vax as much as possible in press release

2. it’s extremely fucked that consequential public health messaging is coming thru a corporate filter
that early data not verified by independent bodies is coming straight to the public via corporate press release - about a massively consequential therapeutic with the potential to transform our lives! - is in itself a shameful indictment of the for-profit pharmaceutical industry
...and the fact that several people are angrily calling me an anti-vaxxer for noting that wildly successful preliminary results aren’t 100% certain yet is a shameful indictment of twitter 🤪

vaccines are good! these results are promising! they’re also preliminary! all true!
a lot of people also think I’m implying that Pfizer/board of experts are “lying.” No, I’m not saying that! Bottom line, if these results hold up it would be amazing - we just need more info about the data and its limitations. screen grab from NYT:
