From the last season of Wenger, all through the seasons of Emery & Ljungberg, and now to Arteta: Arsenal’s basic dilemma has stayed the same:
1/ Either Arsenal are trying to solve the defensive issue by playing more defenders and adopting a rigid system; but then scoring little

2/ Or they are focusing on the best players, who are attackers, but not quite fitting with each other, and then become an unbalanced team conceding too many goals.
I think no coach can solve this problem. It’s a problem of 1) getting better individuals and 2) a better fit/mix

That said, while coaching/tactics cannot solve Arsenal’s fundamental problem, what’s needed now is a lot of flexibility.
With no correct answer, try to find half-right answers by fine-tuning based on single matches, based on current form of players. Muddling through, basically.

Emery’s downfall was his rigidity & inflexibility when form/luck collapsed.
I get that Arteta wants to be a ‘systems’ coach too. But at Arsenal that’s impossible right now. He needs to learn to muddle through, until the squad composition becomes better. I hope he learns that.
