Deep Space 9: a Belated Thread

First off I have seen both TNG and DS9 leads in different productions of Othello the Shakespeare Theatre, which is cool. PStew was the only white actor in an all-Black Othello! Avery Brooks also did Oedipus Rex.

If TNG was all about Picard’s mild embarrassment, Riker’s smirk, Data’s approach to humanity and Wesley shutting up....DS9 is about Sisco’s incredibly sexy voice. And a ton of other species getting more time in the spotlight.

Someone for sure uttered the words “Why don’t they just make the whole ship out of 10 Forward” didn’t they

YAY A TRILL. Yay the people with the hemisphere heads, and the Bajoran generally, and the vaguely British guy from that other time who hung out with Data and yay to Chief Miles. Yay for drawing on so many characters and species introduced so gradually, it all feels organic.

I am SO into the orange jello guy (is there any European royalty Rene Auberjonois WASNT descended from?!)

Also, kudos to the costume designers for realizing there are other human shapes than Tube and Box and Tube With Shapely Hips. I give you, Peplum Jacket!! (I don’t think this lasts much past the pilot BUT STILL)

Likes: takes place in a mall, one last longing look at Capt Picard, presence of orbs, Sisko’s parenting

Dislikes: the parallel “justify yr species” premise, knock-off Gainan, “I was found in space who am I” repetition, the way Gul Dukat says Wormhole

Miles O’Brien is due for a dang promotion. 7 years on the Enterprise is like 49 years at Runway Magazine

I’m having trouble bonding with DS9 guys. So naturally I’m watching a random episode of the original series.

Every subsequent Star Trek really lost something by not denoting rank with SLEEVE BRIC A BRAC from the back of my grandmother’s craft drawer

Another more successful innovation was the omnipotent communication network and comm brooches so they didn’t have to pull out their mesh covered calculators to chat

I think they killed off one more red shirt than they actually brought on this away mission

Many hours later I finally watched all of Generations and I love it more than life itself NOBODY TOLD ME KIRK MAKES PICARD HELP IN THE KITCHEN. I may rewatch it every day until the vaccine comes out.

I would not be surprised to learn that the cast unionized to say, we don’t want the 7 month shooting schedule but we also don’t want to stop crewing the Enterprise can we make fanfic movies instead THX

How else to explain being on a MFing BOAT

I hate seeing the Enterprise destroyed but I REALLY enjoyed what a flagship Hollywood budget did to the background casting (so many employees! No more empty hallways!!!) and the lighting. So moody!

I decided to start First Contact and between Geordi’s eye implants and Dr Crusher’s hair I immediately feel like I’m being punished. 1996 who hurt you.

No idea if this is an unpopular opinion or not but the Enterprise E is...hideous

(The disability episode of DS9, where Melora is only disabled by the gravity being higher than her home planet, is very satisfying, tho Bashir is a taaaad condescending as he gets into her extragravity pants)

After punishing me with three Chief O’Brien eps in a row, the prophets are rewarding me with an Odo and Dax fuck up the prime directive ep and I’m so grateful

Also, I am inordinately happy whenever I recognize a recycled set—and the pair of them just infiltrated RISA bahahahaha

Furthermore that glassy eyed naturalist cult episode gave me such strong In The Heat of the Night vibes.
