Thread/Rant
I have a friend I've known since we were kids. He's still an awesome guy.
Today he posed this question:
Just wondering how mail in ballots were so necessary because of COVID yet people who overwhelmingly voted by mail are now dancing in crowded streets?
Well. It has been a fairly intense few days on our planet, so I responded with the following, only edited for spelling and punctuation.
It came out as a contiguous thought, which often happens when I've been trying to stay calm for toooooo long.
Like to hear it? Here it go.
So I said, "You know? That is a great question. It's perfectly understandable to wonder about what appears to be glaring hypocrisy. But if you break it down a little, it's not as bad as some would like you to think."
First of all, 65.2 MILLION people voted by absentee ballot. There weren't 65.2 million people in the streets by a long shot. 2nd, in the videos I saw, the vast majority of people were wearing masks. Not everyone was, agreed--and it still doesn't make it OK.
3rd, people with compromised immune systems were probably not in the streets in high numbers. It is barbaric to suggest that those people were wrong in not wanting to vote in person.
4th, those of us who were anticipating a huge, unprecedented level of vote suppression by trump et al were not incorrect, We were right to assume King CheAto would stop at nothing to "win", we planned accordingly, and we voted early.
We watched trump install yet another "acting" director of yet another govt. agency. We watched that person, who had stupid amounts of conflicts of interest, destroy millions, if not billions of $$ worth of taxpayer-purchased mail processing equipment in every PO in the USA.
We watched Republican governors eliminate polling locations and remove drop boxes in huge numbers. See: Texas. We knew from paying attention year after year, that Republicans have done everything they can possibly dream of to suppress votes.
If they are breathing, they are dismantling the Voting Rights Act. See: North Carolina. It used to be they passed these civil rights violations off as "election security" and OMG "VOTER FRAUD", and 'DEAD PEOPLE VOTE Y'ALL!' when there is almost nothing to support it.
There is no proof of fraud, OR THEY'D HAVE PRODUCED IT ALFUCKINGREADY. Cool thing for them is they don't have to prove ANYTHING to their base. Their base hasn't paid attention to what they are DOING for YEARS.
So, yes, we voted early. I hand-carried my ballot to my local SBE a month ago because I didn't trust the mail. Seems I and 65M other people were correct in preparing for f*ckery, as evidenced by the vast number of ballots DeJoy instructed them NOT TO POSTMARK.
It is not a stretch to assume that most of those who voted early were D, and most of those who voted the day of, were R. That is why he wanted to STOP COUNTING where he was leading, and COUNT MORE where he was losing. THAT is why they are yelling FRAUD and STOLEN ELECTION.
We were told MONTHS AGO to expect him to look good election night, before absentee ballots were counted. Many officials asked to count them early, citing Covid concerns, and vast numbers of ballots, and the trump administration told them to suck it. (Why we're still counting.)
In short, WHAT THEY ARE SPEWING IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING, (I just made that up) trying like hell to finagle a win for their king, and if they can't do that, incite civil war and more division. That, my dear, is called projection: accuse your enemies of that which you are guilty.
It is a decades-long con. I'm sick of their tactics, and I'm sick of people not even attempting to understand what's really going on by consuming even a small amount of readily available public information--wait--what was your question again?
Anyhoo, that felt GREAT! Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
Now. Lets all get along and sing Kum-bah-yah and toast marshmallows and tell ghost stories! Who's with me? Who needs a hug?
