When the filter is set to maximize profits, Facebook elevates conspiracy sites over legit news sites to serve up clickbait, thereby commodifying news and undermining democracy. Oops.
For 51 weeks a year, Facebook does not internalize the harms to democracy that its screwed-up algo inflicts on society. But let’s trust market forces to solve this problem, y’all!
One last (scary) thought: Does Facebook have the power to tip an election? 2016 for Trump by pushing conspiracies, and 2020 for Biden by pushing legit news? If so, that’s too much power for one site.
