“Captain Wales served for a decade - undertaking 2 tours to Afghanistan - the first member of the Royal family in twenty-five years to serve in a war zone. Upon leaving the army to focus on his duties, he vowed his time in the army would "stay with him for the rest of his life".” https://twitter.com/madaboutmeghan/status/1325574424867840001
“A promise he has kept in the years since with supporting veterans, military charities and his inspiring brainchild Invictus at the very heart of his work. All of the above serves to explain the enormous disappointment I felt this morning as I scrolled through the Sunday papers.”
“On a day for reflection, it was quite shocking to see royal aides using today of all days to inform several papers -- incl The Sunday Times & the Telegraph -- Harry "had hoped to return to the UK for the event". He was informed he’d have "no official role" & "wasn’t invited".”
“Determined to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice, Harry made a personal request to Buckingham Palace for a wreath to be laid on his behalf. Not only was this "refused", quite clearly it was decided the next course of action was to inform the press.”
“Harry is said to have been "deeply saddened" by this. It's an appalling situation and quite clear those who were actively against the couple during their time in the UK continue to behave with an astonishing degree of pettiness considering the significance of the day.”
“The fact the Queen's grandson who commendably served in the armed forces was unwelcome at Whitehall alongside his family -- and the continued attempts to discredit him by attacking his commitment to the military -- is frankly rather disturbing at this stage”
“...and perhaps a window on the internal situation which became intolerable for the couple.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself @MadAboutMeghan. This leak from royal aides follows a previous story from the same @thesundaytimes reporter impugning Harry’s commitment as Invictus founder & patron. In that case, he was forced to defend himself through legal action.
There appears to be an agenda from the BRF/aides to cast aspersions on Harry’s service to the military while holding his honorary appointments as a form of extortion pending the 12 month review. The rancor & pettiness is disgraceful on any day but particularly #RemembranceSunday .
Update: “On #RemembranceSunday , wreaths are laid by members of the BRF, politicians, VIPs, forces & reps. They’re also laid by youth orgs, charities & members of the public. For example, royal photographer Athur Edwards was permitted to lay a wreath on behalf of readers of The Sun” https://twitter.com/madaboutmeghan/status/1325574424867840001
“A wreath could have been left after the ceremony. I do think Harry's name could have been added to one given the work he's done with @WeAreInvictus, @supportthewalk, the @EndeavourFund, & Team Rubicon UK ( @React_Response) and many other military charities.”
“Harry still means a great deal to the military community. Even if one feels he shouldn't be included, the only purpose leaking it to The Sunday Times serves is to humiliate him.”
“In fact, there was a wreath ready and waiting for him — the official organizers of the event, which honors those who have been killed and wounded in war, had created a display and set it aside for Harry.” (PEOPLE)
“But courtiers and palace officials decided that he couldn’t have his wreath added to those from other members of the royal family because he and Meghan Markle are no longer working members of the institution.” (PEOPLE)
“Harry “understands that he doesn’t have the same formal role in the family as he used to,” a source close to him tells PEOPLE. “But he was saddened and disappointed by the decision.””
“Consider Princess Madeleine of Sweden, who lives in the US with her family and opted to forfeit titles for her children. Madeleine has been able to return as she wishes, participate in family occasions and continue to work on the causes closest to her heart.”
Lacey: ”If everything was hunkydorey there seems no reason why a wreath shouldn’t have been laid in Harry's name. If the BRF or palace wanted to cooperate then it’d seem 2 be a perfectly reasonable request 2 make...I don't think it augurs well 4 the prospects of a reconciliation”
Let me add: IMO not allowing a wreath to be placed on H’s behalf was within the BRF’s rights. He’s not a working royal. That said, they could’ve found some way to do it via a military org that he supports & it would’ve helped signal (even if untrue) a thawing of the relationship.
They chose not to & it comes across as spiteful, vindictive & just plain mean just as the spectacle the BRF put on at Commonwealth Day was. The Firm has only themselves to blame b/c they decided to leak it to embarrass H. That was also the BRF’s choice. That is my only issue.
I don’t care abt Andrew or the Duke of Kent, who’s retired & who still has honorary military roles. They found a way for Arthur of all ppl to lay a wreath so let’s stop w/ the facade that it couldn’t have been done. They didn’t want to do it,& they made sure that everyone knew it.
So if you’re defending the BRF’s right to exclude Harry from the ceremony or have the audacity to defend their leaking of the decision, that’s fine. But don’t crow about H being put in his place & then cry foul when the BRF gets dragged for filth across the Internet.
The BRF made their choice & choices have consequences. This choice made them look like trash & fueled antagonism against the Firm. Just as royalists love to say H&M can’t have their cake & eat it too, neither can the BRF. They can’t espouse duty & honor & treat a veteran like this.
They can’t message thru the papers how much they miss Archie & wish for the dissolution of his parents’ marriage in the next breadth. This isn’t Nov 2018 & H&M aren’t bound by UK reporting. The world’s BS detector is better calibrated, even if the Firm remains as tone deaf as ever.
