A young American man who left his comforts here in the States to fight for Croatia, over 4K miles from here. Little known fact, I wanted to go back to the Homeland and fight for Croatian freedom, something that my dad never thought he'd see.
My foster family thwarted my plans to fight for the HOS. I learned about the war from my dad and my cousin, Rissie, who took heart ripping footage on grainy VHS in 1991. I wanted to go fight to defend my people even as a 5th grader. My dad died in 1993.
Croatia achieved independence in 1995. I was a sophomore, but still wanted to fight. I wish I could have congratulated Colton for his bravery, his valor, his fearlessness. More than likely, he had Croat blood in him, like I do, but if he didn't, in my heart, he is.
He was a full blood patriot. We knew our ideals, fought for our ideals and died for them. Do you know your ideals and are you willing to die for yours? Freedom comes at a heavy cost. We must never forget it, no matter where you hail from and ethnic group.
