Hi #CLST6, for this #LookCloser8 I am going to dive into an object for my Project 4! I plan on researching and comparison Assassin’s Creed Odyssey's 3d visualisations of monuments with real scholarship. For the purposes of this thread, I focus on the Sanctuary of Asclepius.
The Sanctuary of Asclepius was dedicated to the god Asclepius, who was the Greek God of Medicine. The sanctuary site had many hospitals and temples which help us understand the healing cults of the time. [1]
Because of class lectures, I believe this to be the actual remains of the Temple of Asclepius at the Sanctuary. These temples sat across from the altar and housed the cult statue of the deity, and also allowed worshippers to leave some of the more valuable offerings[2].
As Debby Sneed comments, this sanctuary was in fact the largest healing sanctuary in Greece, with evidence of people with disabilities. For example, the sanctuary has more ramps than any other sanctuary, and one of the most common votive offerings were anatomical models.[3]
If we look at the 3D model that Sneed has of the Temple, we see similarities to these columns, in height and design[4]. As I dive into the sanctuary in Assassin's Creed, I am excited to determine its accuracy; are there ramps, did it focus on healing, and is the layout similar?
