It’s not like I JUST started discussing politics when Trump took office. But I was not politically engaged when I first joined Twitter 11 years ago.
Like, I was a dummy. I voted Obama twice. I had “hope”. I thought capitalism was alright. I had no worthwhile views on internationalism or foreign policy, outside of “get the fuck out” of certain countries.
I’m still not a PhD or “expert”, but I’m more of scholar than a dreamer now. I’m trying to engage more than once every 2-4 years. And I’m trying to learn how things work on “my level”, not just at the federal.
Additional work is going out and connecting and building with the people. Volunteering, putting up actual money and time for the shit I claim I believe in as a politic. Praxis fucking matters. So I have to show up.
Malcolm said his university was books. I’m in undergrad— Social science major— those courses are trite. My bookcase has more challenges than those professors pose in their syllabi.
But I’m not validating their “teachings” because they are teachers. I still need to develop my own understandings, even if I pass their course, that doesn’t mean I think they are correct.
They don’t form their curriculum around Black radicalism. And I’m not looking to be graded on my level of radicalization. I’m trying to get liberated. So if there’s more to learn/know/internalize, I have to do it.
By the way, participating in the general presidential election is no indication that people know how federal politics work. Voting is not an indication that one knows how ANYTHING political works. https://twitter.com/GoddessCru/status/1325114127665295360
