Well would you look at that. Today is the 25th Anniversary of my FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME! Liquid Swords by @TheRealGZA , released on November 7th of 1995. To celebrate, I’m going to do a track by track review via thread. I hope y’all enjoy!
What a way to start it off. The self titled intro track is absolutely gorgeous. I remember all this year and some of last year I would smoke my weed to this album, back to front. GZA’s references and lyrics just catch me off guard every single time. Fire đŸ€đŸ”„
Duel Of The Iron Mic is fucking fire bro. “Picture blood baths and elevator shafts” is a line that will always stick with me, shit is gritty. I loved Noodle’s verse, but I think we know who stole the show. INS spits about street life and the coke game with his signature sauve đŸ”„
This nigga talking about heads rolling down hillsides. GZA touts his style as “mad murderous”, and I can’t say I disagree. The call and response with Method Man between verses always got me making the stank face. Also who can forget “Unbalanced like ants and elephants on seesaws”
GZA starts the track off painting a vivid image of the gang life, and doesn’t fall off as the song goes on. His references, such as Bruce Lee’s death, 10 percenters , and Pan Am Flight 103, just help to make your head turn with every carefully crafted lyric.
Yet another track with Inspectah Deck alongside The Genius. The vocals on the chorus and the beat help to set the mood for a song that’s just as cold as the title suggests. The violent stories both MC’s paint with their voices are clear as day; just another day in Shaolin
GZA really hates record labels. Like, a lot. So much so, that he made a track dissing them exclusively. He throws shots at Tommy Boy off rip. exclaiming “Tommy ain’t my motherfuckin Boy.” Can’t blame him considering they pushed him to change his flow, only to drop him. Fuck em...
Best song on the album. 4th Chamber is just different. The filthy guitar sample. The banging drums. Everyone on the track, whether it be Ghost, Killah Priest, RZA, or GZA, can be given best verse. Personally, GZA’s verse is my favorite. This shit is perfect sonically...no cap đŸ”„
GZA and Method Man, a deadly combination. It’s like the other side to 4th Chamber. I was very disappointed that Mef wasn’t on 4th Chamber, as I thought he was built for that beat. But this more than makes up for it. Both of their verses are gold. And the beat is beautiful
One of the greatest Wu skits ever. GZA’s storytelling is great all throughout the album, with this track having some of his strongest. My jaw dropped when I found out the story about the bomb being put in the dude’s leg was real. His Mafia references are also top tier. The Genius
