ok so here’s the thing that i think @DanReynolds and honestly a lot of people completely fail to understand:
the value of shutting the fuck up
the value of shutting the fuck up
it really rubs me the wrong way when white people get called out and their response to being called out is go off on tangents about how yes, obviously,
human rights must be fought for
, how dare you insinuate that i think anything other than that, you look stupid

in doing this there is zero accountability and zero acknowledgment that your words and opinions hurt people
in fact i’d even go as far as to say it’s a form of gaslighting
in fact i’d even go as far as to say it’s a form of gaslighting
so from my pov dan’s little rant backpedaling on his original tweet means absolutely nothing and shows that for all his talk of being an activist and a champion or whatever he still does not get how these things are supposed to work on a very basic level
the fact of the matter is that by saying something hurtful like he did, you’ve already done damage and there’s no way you’re going to be able to undo that. trying to pivot the dialogue onto defending yourself just screams desperation and anxiety about people liking you
and i think the ONLY way to address these kinds of things is to a) delete the tweet, b) say sorry and acknowledge the validity of the callouts, c) accept that people are always going to be mad at you no matter what because believe it or not actions have consequences
and most importantly, d) shut the fuck up
if you are in this situation the best thing you can do is sit down and be quiet
anything you say will make it worse and you will look silly for trying

i genuinely do not understand how dan got to this point where he thinks of himself as a leading voice in these fights (which he as a cishet white man fundamentally cannot be) and why he feels that he needs to say something about everything
and this has been the cornerstone of my issue with his “activism” this whole time i think bc it really feels like he’s using all of it as a way to shove off acknowledging his own white guilt
so when he gets challenged on that like he was last night he doesn’t know how to address it other than just trying to remind people that I Am A Good Person Who Does Good Things, Remember?
but no you have to internalize the criticism, think introspectively about your privilege, and then gradually prove you’ve learned through your actions and behaviour
which i don’t think there’s reason to believe that Dan gets that because the response he gave is def more about deflecting rather than reflecting
