“Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for reading fiction books.”
I’m a big advocate of reading Fiction, and this book is a testament to the value one can reap from them.

Set in Nazi Germany, we follow the story of a young girl named Liesel, an orphan, a daughter, a friend, and a great lover of words.
These are some of the insights I learned from following her journey.

In Molching, a fictional town where most of the story took place, poverty ran rumpant.
Children were forced to steal, and a full stomach was only for the fortunate.

Books were a luxury, not a commodity. A rarity seen amongst the rich. Literacy still an uncommon trait.
And freedom, oh sweet liberty, was but a luxury only afforded in the privacy of one’s home

They were ruled under a dictatorship which demanded complete allegiance to their ideals and their Fuhrer.
Opposition was met with an iron hammer, or, in the cases presented in this book, a whipping, deportation to war or the loss of livelihood.

In their world, to be a specific race meant you were crucified and dehumanised.
A narrative we shamefully see dotted along our short-lived time as a species.

In her story we witnessed the intense and personal effects of the persecution of the Jews.
They were Germans one day, and the next they were but a pest on the people they once called Brother.

In our time period where everything is in excess, we forget to be grateful.
We forgot how they suffered. We forget to do better.
We forgot how they suffered. We forget to do better.
We take our education for granted, and the food we consume unconsciously enter our bodies without a thought.
We consume mindlessly, and often we find ourselves incredibly selfish. We seek validation, and instead of bringing each other up we come at one another with slander.

We could do better.
They fought for the ideas of:
Freedom
The Right for Everyone to be Equal in opportunity
And we:
Fight for popularity
Seek opportunity to bring each other down

What comes with this ungrateful attitude is a constant dissatisfaction towards life.
Even to have more than they did, still we complain.

T’was a period of great suffering, yet in that suffering we saw the souls of many shine bright through the veil of prosecution and injustice.
We witnessed the beauty of the human spirit, and how it can triumph even in the darkest of places.

Through the book I witnessed how the simplicity of life can be rendered beautiful through our relationships with one another, and how our values place us in this ever-going conflict between the duality of good and evil.
Though in this book, there was no clear winner.

My favourite character was Hans Hubermann, a simple painter and accordionist, a war veteran who was a self-proclaimed coward, but a good man, and a good Father.
He taught me kindness and courage.
And Liesel Meminger (our protagonist) helped further teach me the power of words.

Some key actions I took from the Book Thief:
Be Kind.
Be Courageous.
Love freely and strongly.
Be grateful.
Words are powerful, learn to use them well.
Truly I recommend giving it a read.
