Vivek Chibber: "The natural base for the left to deploy the electoral road is going over to the Republicans... It's not there yet... but the Democratic Party is hemorrhaging working-class voters." (approx. 30 minutes).
This has become a kind of truism in a certain segment of the left. The empirical analysis should advance, but it seems obvious the GOP has its own internal limits here, and that some of the realignment is along occupational, regional, urban/ex-urban lines; so not too convincing.
I'd say both US (capitalist) parties attempt to win by assembling cross-class coalitions in which the working/ workin-poor are a dominated fraction. I'd say Chibber's analysis is as captive to this extant framing as the "woke neoliberalism" he condemns. Tough to breakthrough.
I personally think it could be quite productive if we could engage constructively/non-defensively with this argument within a broader left, but it does not seem possible.
