Why are white people so uncomfortable whenever their true histories are told? National Trust, Scottish railways networks, Liverpool, etc all built on the backs of slaves and through genocide via colonisation. These are facts.
Enslavement created colonialism and capitalism. Entire areas of the world cleared so the people could become slaves and the land could be converted in plantations. All of the wealth went into spa towns, British railways, roads, National Trust follies, etc.
Every time I hold a talk about climate colonialism which addresses this, someone always asks "but what about the working class" by which they mean the white working class, and not the global working class. As if colonialism didn't create the global working class.
Yes, land was stolen from the white British working class, Ireland was colonised, Scots and Irish were forced to flee to the colonies, and unwanted poor people were shipped to the colonies as prisoners. That does not erase the fact that white supremacy was created by this process
You cannot look at America and Australia - both of whom we have strong ties to - without thinking of continued genocide and white supremacy. Indigenous peoples have been wiped out across both continents for white supremacy. That trauma & loss will never heal.
This isn't about blame, it's about understanding processes and access to power. We need to understand how we got to this point and work out ways to heal from it instead of pretending it didn't happen.
