Thread on #USAelection2020 and lessons for @UKLabour.

1. There are many, many important lessons for Labour to learn from the US election so far. The first one being Labour can’t win anything without us, Black people and people of colour.
2. We are the main block of voters who have stuck with Labour through thick and thin and this has been the case for decades, and yet we are overwhelmingly missing from positions of power across all of Labour’s structures.
3. Labour needs to connect with communities at a core level and esp with people who are never represented in spaces CLPs operate in. ‘Community organising’ is NOT about talking at people, chanting mantras at them to convince them that your point of view is the only point of view.
4. Community organising is about people, their community and communities. Labour HQ is far removed from people and communities. A British Stacey Abrams would be treated with suspicion, subjected to multiple layers of white male gatekeeping and sidelined.
5. A British Stacey Abrams would also be targeted by factions and infighting carried out by everyone including Black people and people of colour.
Stacey Abrams: “Effective leaders must be truth seekers, and that requires a willingness to understand truths other than our own.”
