This morning my house help came home in tears. Yesterday she spent all day at the police station for no fault of hers. @MumbaiPolice
A few weeks ago, she put in all her savings and purchased a second hand phone for her son, so he could take online classes.
She spent 6000 on the phone, and then a few weeks later 1500 to repair it as it wasn't functioning properly, pretty much emptying her savings.
A couple of days ago she got called to the police station saying that the phone was a stolen one and she needed to go in. She was kept there the whole day, taken from one police station to another and she was clueless. She took along with her the person whom she bought it from.
After trying all day to convince them that she bought the phone legally and had no idea that it was a stolen phone, they told her that she has to appear for a court case and that's that.
She now has to pay for the lawyer out of her pocket, go to the court on appointed dates, do a covid test before going to court, and deal with all this stress. All because her son needed a phone for online classes.
This poor woman has already been under tremendous stress because of the pandemonium, has lost 2 of the jobs she was doing previously. Struggling to make ends meet. And trying to educate her son through it all. And this comes out of nowhere.
If someone can please help me figure a way she doesn't have to go through this shit just because she didn't know she was buying a stolen phone, please let me know. She could really use any help right now. Looking for lawyers it anyone who can give advice.
Ok so this blew up. Quick update @MumbaiPolice got in touch and at least 3 DCPs from other police stations got in touch as well. They are organising a phone for her from an NGO so hey soon can continue studying.
Thank you everybody you retweeted and amplified. It really helped. I'm also going to talk to a couple of lawyers who have shared numbers.
While faith in humanity is not fully restored, there is definitely hope ❤️
