I’m still trying to process how close this election is with almost a quarter million dead.
I just don’t understand it. I’m guessing about 75% of Trump voters are materially worse off than they were under Obama. So this is not about concrete selfishness

This is about 60some million people wholeheartedly embracing the deeply ugly side of humanity.
And the fact that so many of them must desperately need an aid package that won’t be coming from a senate they refused to change

I’d have a hard time understanding this without the pandemic, but in the midst of this mostly man-made misery?
What scares me most is how powers like Russia and China look on at America and think... that’s a shitload of highly suggestible people.

And this is a group of people who profess to think of life (as it applies to the abstraction of a foetus) as sacred, but consistently vote in ways that show they have little value for concrete human life.
They patently don’t give a shit about children massacred by madmen,

Nor do they care enough about the almost 1/4 million fellow Americans dying of a disease they could easily mitigate substantially by putting on a fucking mask.
You can’t say you love your country when your country IS people, many of whom are dying, and you do nothing about it.

Their consistent ability to be deeply emotionally combative over abstractions, but completely unmoved by real lives… is haunting, startling.
To an ideological enemy, this is a huge basket of ripe, low-hanging fruit.

So, while I’m glad that it looks very likely America will get a saner, less destructive President, I still can’t get over the sheer number of people willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives over really intangible abstractions.
All during this pandemic, I have seen people talk about Asia and their acquiescent populations.
But historically, China has been willing to sacrifice millions for political goals. But when it came to Covid, once the gravity of it penetrated, the Central Committee moved serious

mountains to shut the spread down about as fast as a country with a population of over a billion could do it.
Because they rightly knew that to let that misery spread unchecked was a threat to their power.
Don’t tell me Asians are acquiescent. THey’re just not suicidal.

It’s not that they have some greater version of love of their fellow citizen. That’s not my experience.
But they do have an understanding of contagion. How is it that almost half of America doesn’t?

Has half of America lost the understanding that a modicum of cooperation is the basis of any working civil society?
I spent 20 years living in a country where almost no one ever called the cops unless there was a corpse. In HCMC cops are considered almost universally corrupt.
