This is why Indigenous Education is so important. As well schools should be held accountable for what’s being posted on their walls. This was posted in the Cardston Jr. High school. Posted in one of the Nations Facebook groups. #cardston #Alberta
I’m to provide a history lesson for anyone who does not understand the political climate here. Cardston sits on what was the hunting grounds of the Blackfoot nation. A few months before Treaty 7 was signed, #mormon pioneers arrived. Because there was women and children
The Blackfoot chief chose to allow them to stay for a season. The Nation helped them survive, with the understanding that the pioneers would NOT build a settlement on their hunting grounds, instead they were provided land on the other side of the river.
The Blackfoot chief was told that the Treaty he was signing included the hunting grounds. The government noticing that the pioneers were there, made a deal with them. The Mormons got that land, and with the Indian Act already in place, the Blackfoot people lost everything.
Including access to their hunting grounds. To save their culture the Blackfoot chiefs had to do their ceremonies at the river bottom. They managed to keep their culture, while the Mormons happily built their temple. Recently a land claim was passed, that proves
Oral history. The land this student lives and attends school on, is the stolen hunting grounds of the Blackfoot Nation. How does this effect them? If they belong to my church, the Mormon church, that history is ours. We must teach it.
We must learn from it. Continuing to ignore it does nothing. I will be contacting the school next week, emailing them today. We are guests on Blackfoot territory and this is horrendous. #racism #IndigenousLivesMatter @RachelNotley @JanisIrwin @SPhillipsAB
