1/ Ok, let’s hear it for the Founding Fathers. As someone who thought the Electoral College is ridiculous, I am now going to eat my own words. Is it fucking ridiculous that someone with 75M votes has to claw and scratch their way to a win against a guy who only pulls 70M?
2/ Yes. But the virtues outweigh the vices. Really? You ask. And what are these virtues exactly? D-E-C-E-N-T-R-A-L-I-Z-A-T-I-O-N.

Imagine if you will if the Federal Government was involved in running the Presidential election.
3/ How long do you think it would take the Orange Mussolini to shut down the vote?

The founding fathers were very wise to keep power as decentralized as possible and most importantly to keep elections on the state level.
4/ This keeps whoever is the President from messing with the process.

Now does this lead to a bifurcated country with parts looking like mid-century Albania and other parts looking like Monaco? Unfortunately yes.
5/ Does it also open the way for minority rule where the rural few impose their will on the urban many - to some extent yes! But in all those cases we have a remedy. VOTE.

So no. We are far from perfect. And the duopoly of our system has all the creativity of Coke vs. Pepsi.
6/ But continue to lurch forward. We continue to grant rights to more and more of our fellow citizens and despite the hardcore QAnon racist minority, the country is more tolerant and more accepting.
7/ As Churchill said, democracy is the worst of all governments except for all the rest. And we barely escape our brush with fascism it's time to appreciate the wisdom of the Founding Fathers who understood that concentrated power is always the biggest danger in the end.
