As I come to the final stages of my PhD, I thought I’d share some insight into what I believe makes a PhD a worthwhile endeavor.

1) Choose your PhD mentor(s) VERY wisely. The student-mentor relationship can make or break your PhD.

Do your homework when looking into prospective programs. Do you see yourself working closely with this individual for the next 3-5 years? How about when times get tough?
2) Don’t even bother choosing a program / research topic if you aren’t 100% all in. Your PhD will become a very miserable process if you have any doubts about what you’re doing.

Remember, you’ll be spending YEARS doing this. Better enjoy it.
3) Always stay ahead of the curve on your research. Once you fall behind, it’s very, very difficult to catch up. This leads to subpar research and ultimately a subpar PhD.

This usually stems from point #2...
4) The biggest road blocks in quantitative-based PhDs? Writing and statistics by far.

Take as many stats classes as possible and write everyday you can. Trust me, you can always improve on both of these.
5) A PhD is your one of the few times in life where you have the opportunity to truly create your own learning environment.

Your PhD can propel you to astounding heights, or you can look back on your PhD with regrets. I’ve seen both happen numerous times.

You decide...
