Truth: High- and low-functioning labels are for Neurotypicals, not Neurodivergents.
I've never had a day where I said to myself, "Wow, it's so good to be high-functioning today," or, "My functioning is so high, I might as well be neurotypical!"
If I was so "high-functioning," why was I bullied, self-harming, masking, and melting down 2 to 3 times a week?
But sure, let's label autistics by what allistics see. Not what autistics feel and experience.
Don't get me wrong: I see what they see. I have a job. I can script conversations. I can go out to restaurants for dinner when the right structures are in place. But how does the "high-functioning" label actually support, help, or guide me and my treatment.
It's time to see autistics by our individual support needs, not by arbitrary labels based on appearances.
