This is a really good piece and so important. Can I also point out that people like me have been saying something similar about media reporting for years, and have been called trolls because of it. So add that problem to the list. I don’t call out media fails because I’m ‘tribal’ https://twitter.com/murpharoo/status/1324820267005145088
Apparently it’s only journalists who can critique journalists. And those brave enough to do so are extremely rare.
We also need to talk about why journalists struggle to focus on truth and don’t call out lies. The reason is simple - they think if they call out right wing lies (Trump, Morrison, Boris), they’re showing bias towards the left. This they see as a greater sin than being truthful.
The whole ‘there are two tribes each with their own truth’ narrative is part of the corrosive problem with journalists perception of the world. As I’ve said many times, what is often framed as debate between left and right is very open actually a struggle between truth and lies.
Climate change is happening vs it’s a hoax. Lockdowns are best way to deal with covid versus lockdowns are the problem. These issues are not tribal, nor ideological. They are simply scientific fact versus self interested lies. If media can’t tell difference, there’s your problem.
Identifying truths like ‘Trump is lying about illegal votes’ is not partisan. If your bias is towards truth, you are doing your job properly. No, you won’t always get it right. And you should be called out when you get it wrong. At least start by knowing what truth looks like.
Sorry about all the typos. My excuse is tired thumbs from too much refreshing 🙃
