ĆUMURIJA, The Bridge on The River Miljacka. This thread will try to visualize the importance this bridge played during the Siege of Sarajevo. It was built by Hadži Hasan, around 1556 year, when it was first mentioned in the books. The bridge was named after him.

Hadži Hasanova ćuprija (Hadži Hasan’s bridge) was built to connect Ajas-paša mosque on the right side of the river and Bakr-babina mosque next to the At Mejdan on the left side of the river. Ajas-pašina street and Kolukčijska čaršija were streets of craftsmen and artisans.
They used to throw away ashes and charcoal from their stoves into the Miljacka below the bridge, hence the name, Ćumurija (ćumur=charcoal). Because of several floods & damages bridge was fixed & restored several times but it was finally replaced with metal construction in 1886.
It was constructed by Adolf Kunert. From 1918, the bridge had official name Zrinjskog most (Bridge of Zrinski) named after Croatian Ban Petar Zrinski. In 1993, during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was renamed back to Ćumurija bridge.

Miljacka flows through Sarajevo & it's 35,9 kilometres long. There are tens of bridges built on this river & some of the most prominent ones are:
#ŠeherĆehajina ćuprija
#Careva ćuprija
#Latinska ćuprija
#Ćumurija
#Drvenija
#Čobanija
#AjfelovMost (Eiffel bridge)

All of the above bridges were exposed to sniper fire from the Serbian artillery positions. It was difficult and very dangerous to cross them during the Siege of Sarajevo.
All except one, Ćumurija bridge, because it was relatively hidden and protected by the tree canopy.

It was hidden especially during the summer period. Ćumurija was the most frequent and busiest bridge of all not only for its safety but because of the nearby ‘Brewery’. People used to collect water from it and this was the bridge they used to get there.

After the war, in 2002, Ćumurija bridge was reconstructed and expanded to serve as two-lane vehicle crossing bridge. Metal construction similar to the original idea was preserved.
