the construct itself was created to justify mistreatment based on religious difference (Xian vs. Jewish/Muslim heritage, and then Xians enslaving Xian Indigenous/African peoples) re: Limpieza de Sangre, re: Iberian involvement in the slave trade https://twitter.com/bratzdreamhouze/status/1324823313009442816
in virtually every historical institution that has utilized slavery, caste and hypodescent/hyperdescent in racialization of colonized and enslaved peoples. Re: Mestizaje, re: One Drop Rule, Re: Branqueamento/Blanqueamiento
There are multiple people who were previously racialized as nonwhite in the U.S. (the Irish, Ashkenazi Jews, Southern Europeans, esp Southern Italians and Sicilians) that are now racially white because of specific government targeted radicalization and legal policies
Southern Italians and Sicilians were literally aligning in solidarity with Black people because of shared experiences with racialized violence and the U.S. government broke this up because they wanted to maintain the dynamic of white supremacy.
the literal reason why MENA people are classified as white on the U.S. census is because Syrians, Lebanese, Yemenis, and Armenians FOUGHT to be legally classified as white and up until the 90s-early 2000s, were regarded as such in the U.S. racial schema
