1. This is fascinating, because it shows how what you think you're looking at profoundly shapes what it is you see.

The moment in the doctored video everyone focused on, after all, wasn't really the PornHub logo. It was John King's face after he swiped it away. https://twitter.com/Mediaite/status/1324666137280421890
2. We all remarked on the stern "Just you wait till I'm off air" glance he seemed to be shooting at the production crew, simultaneously keeping his emotions in check after smoothly fixing an embarrassing problem while also letting those responsible know they were in for it.
3. But now it turns out there wasn't any reason for him to be upset. He was just wiping away his own scrawled number. And that look he gave may not have meant anything at all. It might have just been a stray glance as he waited for the guest to come on.
4. It's a useful thing to keep in mind, particularly when you look at still photos. We assume that a photograph captures something important about what someone is thinking or feeling, that the way someone looks tells us something important about who they are.
5. But that photograph may just be capturing an arbitrary expression that has little or nothing to do with what the person being photographed was actually feeling. It may just be a trick of the light, frozen forever and therefore seemingly meaningful.
