ALRIGHT, FINE.

Since everyone wants to suddenly talk about #Sherlock series 5, here is a thread solely dedicated to some actual quotes from over the years that have proven, over & over, that they planned a five-series arc & series 5 is happening.

Just off the top of my head:
Moffat, 2009.
One year before BBC Sherlock.

"instant series commission, a guaranteed 2nd series, a cuddle, a guaranteed 3rd series, & a whispered invitation back to 'my place' (where I'll explain that really I've got a 5-series arc in mind, & a spin-off)"
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2009/jul/16/tv-writers-support-bbc-drama
Mark Gatiss, 2013.

"Having started off with Sherlock and John much younger men than they are usually presented, it would be rather lovely to keep going. I love the idea of them being in their 50's and still doing it."

Moffat, 2014.

“...we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future. And we plotted out the whole of series four and five.”

2016.

Moffat: "We've had the most sketchy discussions on what we'd do."

Gatiss: "We have an idea for season five on a Post-it note. That's as far as we've got. Unless I'm lying?"

2020, celebrating the 10 year anniversary.

Moffat: Thank you for showing more patience than any other fandom.

Gatiss: Stay tuned! https://twitter.com/CharCubed/status/1287164265821020163
All of the articles were before series 4 aired.

It's often a pattern. In press before a series, they are more open. In press after episodes air, they are more cagey, in general.

After s4 (with ~We don't know if we're coming back. We left it at a good place~) was no exception.
For added bonus reading, here's a collection of some of the quotes where they talk repeatedly for a decade about how the heart of the show is the relationship between these two men. It's not a detective show, but a show about a detective. It is the thesis.

Series 4 deviates in a way that leads us to want to ask WHY, and try to figure out its puzzling elements. Series 5, as we see above, has been planned and will present the answer. The show itself is the mystery for the viewers, for those who are into that.

I'm just saying.
