I hope folks recognize the power actually resides with the people, that it’s not about voting folks into office & then crossing your fingers while hoping they’ll do what you need. We have to build organized power in our communities, set our own agendas & mobilize as necessary.
We disempower ourselves by believing our ability to achieve what we need depends strictly on the whims of a handful of ppl who hold elected office. We mobilize by the millions, then cede our power to an individual. We need to shift our understanding of & relationship to power.
While we might vote strategically for certain parties, like voting for the Dem presidential candidate to defeat Trump, it’s actually not necessary for us to wed ourselves to an agenda set by anyone but ourselves. We certainly shouldn’t let the white elite dictate our agenda to us
I strongly believe running issue-based campaigns at a local level and organizing our communities to act as a political bloc is key. It’s key to building electoral power & putting ppl in office who will represent our interests, but it’s also broader than electoral strategy.
We have to think long term, in terms of how we plan to build sustained, collective power & raise leaders over the span of generation. We have to break free of reacting to election cycles controlled by the white elite. That work happens 24/7/365 & in between elections.
