Hey all! Some folks asked me why Stacey Abrams is being highlighted right now and who she is. So let's chat about her and the work she's being doing and why its so important.
In 2018 Stacey Abrams (D) would have been the first Black woman to be elected Gov. in the US if it wasn't for active voter suppression in Georgia.
Her opponent, Brian Kemp (R), was the current Secretary of State at the time, and oversaw all elections in Georgia.

Kemp refused to step down from the position while he ran for Governor (sound familiar Downey?) Which is not only a conflict of interest because he could influence the results of the election using his position but an abuse of power rooted in white supremacy.
Since the days of Reconstruction, "voting laws" have been used to disenfranchise Black voters.
While Black voters in GA where registering, Kemp made claims about voter fraud & launched an investigation into an org Abrams founded, The New Georgia Project, that registered voters.

While those investigations turned up zilch, Kemp had more than 1.5 million voters purged from the rolls from 2016-2018, shut down polling places, and blocked the registration of nearly 35,000 Georgians.
While Abrams & other organizations fought this voter oppression in the courts & won. The GA legislature created their own system of voter oppression through an exact match program.
Now fast forward to days before the deadline to register for the November election in 2018. People were registering to vote so they can vote for their new Governor, Stacey Abrams.
But Kemp placed about 53,000 voter registration forms on hold due to exact match problems.

About 70% of those applicants who wanted to register so they can vote in the Nov. Election were Black.
Unfortunately Stacey Abrams didn't win the election in 2018 BECAUSE IT WAS STOLEN FROM HER & THOUSANDS OF VOTERS WHO WERE DENIED THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE.

Since then, Abrams has been an absolute powerhouse registering people to vote & fighting uphill battles in GA to save the rest of us.
It is thanks to all her work & so many other Black organizations & organizers on the ground in GA- THEY flipped GA blue & gave us a new President
