I'm already seeing a lot of "well, now we have to move forward and work together'. This is problematic and a huge slap of disrespect for what ACTUALLY happened this week. I'll tell you why....
1. Before we can "move forward" we need to atone for what has already happened. This means we need to again establish what are facts (not creating "both sides" narratives for everything), what is truth and call people wrong or even liars when they say/do things that are untrue.
2. We have to bring almost half the country out of a cult. That is what Trumpism is. IT IS A CULT and bringing people back will not happen without serious work. Yes, there needs to be grace and empathy. There also needs to be atonement and shunning.
Just like addicts have to spend every day fighting against their addiction, Trumpers need to spend every day fighting against this mindset. But they need to detox first and that detox will be painful and hard.
3. Moving forward doesn't get to the root of the problem. This country is really ok with racism and will let atrocities occur if their single issue is spoken to. This can not be allowed to stand. Also, this work is no longer the job of POCs (especially Black people).
White people, this is on you. This election has shown us that even if YOU aren't racist, you are sure ok with the people in your life that are. You don't want to rock the boat, you are exhausted or you are *SHOCKED* at how bad things are.
Well, join the club. We've been here a while and have no more cookies. You know all that work you did over the summer? NOW is the time to show your homework. You want to prove your allyship? GO COLLECT YOUR PEOPLE and don't ask us if you did a good job?
That's all I have for now (and yes, this probably should have been a blog post), but y'all we are just STARTING a really long fight. Don't get tired now.
