Today's @wsucahnrs Prevention Science colloquium is led by @jabaied who is presenting on how White parents talk to their children about race. 1/
Parents described what they would say in a conversation about racism. About 1/3rd of parents had colorblind and color conscious mixed messages (e.g., race doesn't matter and judging based on skin color is wrong...) 2/
Parents who did not talk about racial current events did so to protect their kids (my kid is too young) or were passively avoiding (it hasn't come up.) 3/
Above findings were with 8-12 year olds. What about parents of adolescents?
Parents who did not discuss racial current events (police brutality, border separation, White supremacy) did so to passively avoid, found it unnecessary, or weren't sure what to say. 4/
Her newest study was collected June 2020 from Black and White parents of adolescents. Most parents were talking about BLM protests, way more than before and White parents (79%) were talking almost as much as Black parents (89%). 5/
As expected, conversations looked differently for Black and White families. Data are still being analyzed, so more to come. 6/
This was a great presentation and discussion. Huge thanks to @jabaied.
One main takeaway - your kids are not too young to talk about racism! Infants or toddlers? Try @DrIbram's new book Antiracist Baby. Adolescents? They are more capable than you think. Just start talking. end/
