Me: Why people are wrong about the Fiat Multipla, 20 years after it first went on sale in the UK.

Strap in, I've done a thread 👇
It is a design masterpiece from the desk of Roberto Giolito. Six people in a car with a smaller footprint than today's Renault Clio. The Multipla was way ahead of its time in terms of space efficiency.
The Multipla won Top Gear's Car of the Year in 2000 (look at the suspense from Kate Humble) and then Family Car of the Year for FOUR YEARS running. Meanwhile the public were buying Vauxhall Zafiras instead. 🥱
It featured in @MuseumModernArt's Different Roads Exhibition in 1999 for its interior and exterior design. Look how easy it would be to socially distance in a Multipla. đź“Ź
Deep side windows for better visibility and a better view out for kids to lessen the chances of travel sickness. For comparison, today's more claustrophobic Nissan Qashqai, which is the family car flavour of the times.
One of the most ergonomically thought-out dashboards ever. Gear lever close to the driver, key controls angled towards the driver, air vents that look like a face. Coloured dashboard. High driving position before it was cool.
The door handles incorporated edge protectors to stop metal making contact with other cars or walls. Similarly, the bumpers were black plastic so that scrapes or scratches would be cheaper and easier to repair. This is why Multiplas were popular in Italy.
In 2004, because so many people couldn't see past its design, Fiat did one of the worst facelifts ever (which they had form for back then) and turned it into this nondescript misery.
Thoughtful design is all around us and I reckon it should be celebrated. People love to rip the Multipla to shreds but I think maybe it just arrived before people were ready. Learning how the Multipla did things differently was a big catalyst for me as a kid getting into design.
p.s can you tell i've lost the plot
