Afropessimism talks about Black people being the host in a parasitic relationship with anti-Blackness. This is what we see with Stacey Abrams and all the poor southern Black women in the south turning Georgia Blue. As the host, “redemption is a narrative that feeds off of —
us for its coherence.” This fight and struggle we are currently witnessing did not and would not happen for Stacey Abrams. After she was robbed of an election, she continued to be an agent of the state — allowing herself to be a site that feeds this American imperial parasite
at the expense of poor Black folks. The victory you all are celebrating around Stacey Abrams is a victory for the state, and the state uses an illusory narrative of unification against the horror of Black struggles to redeem and stabilize itself.
The reality is Joe Biden may win and Black people, including Stacey Abrams, will have nothing to show for it. And the United States will be redeemed from Trump and nourished off the blood and struggle of Black people. The United States will thank Black people for our blood that
redeems it time and time again. Bloods that allows for this imperialist state to find its coherence. Yet, we won’t be redeemed, & we have to stop glamorizing the ways Black women continue to rescue this empire from its doom. Where there is white redemption, there is Black Death.
I know some of us agreed that we weren’t going to rob Black people of their Joy today, but I cannot sit back and watch us glamorize the anti-Black violence being wielded through Stacey Abrams.
