A couple of thoughts about German-American relations now that we know that President-elect Biden has won the election. First things first: There'll be a huge sigh of relief in Berlin that might actually be audible all the way across the Atlantic. A thread:
Trump is incredibly unpopular in Germany. I mean it's genuinely remarkable just how much Germans dislike him. Some people on the far-right like him but generally speaking, he's toxic. He's widely seen as rude, uneducated, untrustworthy and hostile towards Germany and the EU
That unpopularity, in addition to Trump being Trump, made it very difficult for German politicians to be seen as "pro-American." A lot of German voters don't see Trump as Trump and America as America. They see it as one thing.
Now that Germany will deal with Biden, some problems will go away. Joe Biden is not going to go on Fox News to insult the Chancellor of Germany. He won't belittle Germany or treat Berlin as some sort of enemy. When disagreements do arise, he'll handle them differently
