This is one of the reasons she drives the Eva simply because she feels like she finally has some worth , this is further proven by the fact when she wasn't in sync with her Eva she was more pissed off about Ayanami and Shinji doing better than.......
.....her than she herself failing at it.

Another thing she does in regards to this is she Tells to Kaji an adult whereas she herself is an minor that she wants to be in a serious relationship with him, not even for a second she thinks that he is twice her age simply because her.
.....emotional side of wanting to be looked by others like she has value in someones eyes is much Greater in her mind than doing something unjustifiable in every way possible.
Basically Asuka's entire Character was written to show the human emotion of being wanted by others....
....and how much it could effect a Person mentally and how much extreme lengths someone can go for it...
