OK Guys. Serious talk time. Where you live and the things you see popular where you are may not work in places you don't live.
One of the reasons super progressive values aren't as easy to pass, even though it seems that it seems it would be in others interest is because they live in red states and are used to being screwed by government, local all the time, federal off and on every year.
I'm a trans woman. I can speak to this. We were making headway, and then Raymond wrote a paper in the 80's. Along with the Regan administration, this combined to keep medicare from recognizing our healthcare.
That means, every other healthcare insurance plan had a good reason to deny and we were on the schedules of the denials for decades after.
This also led to broken leg syndrome where our healthcare became less than secondary once they found out we were trans. And they are fighting right now to be able to keep hospitals from having to save our lives if we're trans. That's a denial of our basic humanity.
We won for a little while with obama who fixed a lot of this, for which, I will be eternally grateful. But because of Trump we've been denied a bunch of things again. Black people have been making those gains and losses for hundreds of years.
And it would be nice to say, "white cis het people just get over it." But that's not how this works. They won't just get over it because they've been convinced that life is a zero sum game and if they give something to someone else, they and their children will be hurt by it.
Fuck that feeling but we're going to have to find a way to get through to them and that our problem for white people and cis and het allies, you're going to have to step up your game. No not inviting your racist uncle to Thanksgiving. Having hard conversation is HARD WORK.
You're gonna feel like shit and that they are unconvinceable and it's easy to write them off. And it's especially hard because bad actors like fox news and breitbart are out here trying to coalesce power by fueling their fears when you aren't around.
And while we're trying to all get things that we personally need, civil rights, economic, educational, whatever, we need to work together and try to see eye to eye instead of fucking dividing ourselves into camps so that we can more easily identify our enemies.
The work to get progress on everything is together. It's through seeing each other eye to eye, meeting each other partway sometimes, giving in other times, holding firm and getting everything some times as well and we, as a party, are going to have different opinions.
If we can't take a leap, we're going to have to take a step and keep fighting for the entire length. And twitter, is not reality. Twitter is it's own bubble. Seattle, where I live, is it's own thing.
