Hot take: maybe Dems *don't* need better outreach to the (white) working class, & the continued insistence that they do reflects entrenched hostility to the reality for which there's mounting evidence: POCs are the driving force of the base & should be acquiesced as such 1/6
Dems have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 elections, a stretch unmatched in modern US history. Their margins have been highest in the yrs w/ notably higher turnout among POCs, specifically Black voters: 96, 08, 12 & possibly '20 2/6
What’s unfolding in GA is a microcosm of the actual assured path to victory for Dems: concerted, inspired efforts to mobilize Black voters, who’ve only increased in # across potentially purple southern states thanks to the reverse great migration of recent yrs 3/6
If you think the organizing & mobilizing efforts in GA are not rooted in class appeals you're not paying attention. As I highlighted in my book, central to Stacey Abrams’s winning messaging is her impassioned defenses of the working class & poor: 4/6
The continued insistence that Dems’ focus on race comes at the cost of core class issues is willfully ignorant of the true story. The most unapologetically bold visions of class-based policy agendas come from women of color in the party. See: Rep’s AOC, Pressley, etc. 5/6
BIPOC women keep showing the blueprint: integrative race & class appeals that energize the critical party base. Stale critiques of the party as moving away from the white working class say more about the desire to center Whiteness than to build broad based winning coalitions 6/6
