No, it's not a mandate. Even if Biden gets 300 electoral votes, even if he has the largest turnout on record & the largest popular vote margin in recent history, it's not a mandate when nearly 70 million Americans vote for Trump & his record over whatever Democrats are offering.
We were all just saying the electoral college is undemocratic. And if Biden wins it by a good margin, it will still be undemocratic, and it still won't mean a Biden mandate. It will be because of Biden barely edging Trump out by a few thousand votes in key states.
A popular vote lead by 4 million may seem huge, but that's only because we've become so divided that we've lowered our expectations. That's a margin of 1.9% of the adult US population.
Even if we account for massive voter suppression, post office shenanigans, and all the rest, assuming Biden would have had even 4 million more votes, giving him an 8 million vote margin, that's still not a mandate when close to 70 million voted Trump.
A large swath of Americans either love Trump and his policies and attitude, or they detest Biden and the democrats platform/attitude/messaging. The answer is certainly complex. There is no catch all explanation here, so stop looking for one.
& please avoid the temptation to think 70 million Americans are evil, are pro fascism, are defenders of white supremacy. That kind of thinking is reductive and callous. It's also been dominant on the left the last four years, and look where it got us: record turnout for Trump.
If you think the left can shout & shame those 70 million Americans into silence, you're wrong. We have to actually empathize w/ them, not assume they're evil morons. We have to examine why the left alienates them. WE have to soul search if we want a true mandate for change.
