I love research and I always envisioned a career in academic medicine, maybe even as Dean one day. But when my sister died during my 1st week in residency, my life changed and I gave up on research and every dream I had of a career in academia...for many reasons I won’t get into.
I dropped all my research projects, I stopped writing. Reading tweets like this though, and seeing this same scenario play out across virtually every institution I’ve been a part of, makes me want to get back in the game. Just to change this. Just because it’s time.
Medical faculty ought to reflect the students they teach and the patients they serve. In this moment, they do not. It’s time we consider why. I’m here bc of the medical education I proudly received @BrownMedicine. I’m grateful of the faculty who contributed to my growth.
However, it’s time for academia and #MedEd more specifically to make space for Black and Latinx physicians to take lead. I am an educator and scholar at heart, and I want to contribute to the field of medicine in more ways than just patient care.
But not if it means I’ll have to sell my soul in the process. Not if it means I can’t bring others along with me. Not if I’ll be the only one once I get there. Not if...
#MedEd we can do better, I know this. But it’s going to take commitment, and investing in one of us just isn’t enough. I’m asking that you invest in our community. Not just me. Our entire community. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. #LatinxMedTwitter #BlackMedTwitter #MedTwitter
