1/ How Omaha saved democracy: a thread. Omaha’s single electoral vote blocked Trump’s path to the White House that would have existed had the states been called as they were leading on Election Night. Trump was ahead in PA and GA and Biden was ahead in NV and AZ.
2/ Had Omaha gone for Trump, Trump could have (and likely would have) demanded ALL STATES stop counting because freezing the vote counts on Election Night (and the days following) would have given Trump a 269-269 tie resolved in Trump’s favor in the House.
3/ Instead, Omaha’s pesky single electoral vote went decisively for Biden, meaning Trump COULD NOT demand that all states stop counting. If they had, Biden wins. Trump was paralyzed in his bully pulpit.
4/ Instead of pounding his narrative of vote-counting fraud into the mainstream (as he did on everything else in his Presidency), the Omaha Dilemma™ forced Trump to be uncharacteristically silent and off-message.
5/ Videos of Trump supporters chanting “Stop the vote!” in PA contrasted with the simultaneous chants of “Count the vote!” in NV instead carried the day (and the days that followed). The master manipulator of the media got owned. By Omaha.
